HANS ULRICH OBRIST

Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zürich, Switzerland) is Artistic Director of Serpentine in London, and Senior Advisor at LUMA Arles. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show World Soup (The Kitchen Show) in 1991, he has curated more than 400 shows.
Some of Obrist's most notable exhibitions include the do it series (since 1993); Take Me (I'm Yours) in London (1995), Paris (2015), New York (2016), and Milan (2017); the Swiss Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice (2014); Enzo Mari at Triennale Milano (2020); and Worldbuilding in Düsseldorf (2022) and Metz (2023). As a co-curator he organised the Cities on the Move series (1996-2000), Laboratorium (1999), the operatic group exhibition Il Tempo del Postino in Manchester (2007) and Basel 2009), as well as the Rooms series in Manchester (2011), Essen (2012), Sydney (2013), Basel (2014) and Shanghai (2015).
In 2013, Obrist began the Handwriting project, in which he collects Post-it notes featuring the handwriting of his interview subjects. These are regularly posted on Instagram at @hansulrichobrist.
Obrist has received the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence (2011), the International Folkwang Prize (2015), and Prix François Morellet (2025).
His publications include Ways of Curating (2015), The Age of Earthquakes (2015), Lives of the Artists, Lives of the Architects (2015), The Extreme Self: Age of You (2021), 140 Ideas for Planet Earth (2021), Édouard Glissant: Archipelago (2021), Remember to Dream (2023), Worldbuilding: Gaming and Art in The Digital Age (2024), Wish You Were Here (2025), and Life in Progress (2026).
